Odate City - Home of the Akita Dog
By plane and bus, it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to get here from Tokyo. Odate City is in Akita Prefecture's northernmost region, on the Sea of Japan side of northern Tohoku. Rivers bring abundant water from the surrounding mountains to this basin, and there are rural landscapes all around. Akita dogs, Kiritampo (pounded rice skewers), and traditional crafts like Odate Magewappa (circular bento boxes) are among the cultural traditions still practiced here.
