Around the time the snow begins to melt late in northern Akita, vibrant flowers quietly begin to bloom in the woods.

Because they bloom a little earlier than most other flowers, they are also called “spring ephemerals” (spring fairies), and are known for sometimes growing in clusters.

While the fields of dogtooth violets blooming in Yatsu, Daisen City, are famous, you can also see various flowers growing in clusters during easy hikes at the foot of Mt. Morishiro in Kita-Akita, as well as at Mt. Houou and the Iwakami Reservoir in Odate.

They typically begin blooming in early April, and the best time to see them is right after the Golden Week holidays in May.
