An Akita Dog Show, organized by the Akita Prefecture Northern Branch of the Public Interest Incorporated Association Akita Dog Preservation Society, is held on a Sunday in early July each year on the lawn at Odate-Noshiro Airport.It is held to check the dogs’ condition in preparation for the Akita Inu Exhibition, to conduct study sessions, and to provide an opportunity for owners to exchange information and socialize. It is also a valuable opportunity for judges from the Society’s headquarters to carefully examine each dog’s appearance and posture and provide direct advice to the owners. Unlike competitive shows where dogs are ranked, this event is conducted in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere from start to finish.

General visitors are most welcome. Since you can interact with the Akita Inus waiting for their turn offstage, many Akita Inu fans from both within and outside the prefecture flock to the event every year. Even airport passengers stop by as they pass through to enjoy interacting with the Akita Inu, a designated Natural Monument.

It’s a rare chance to see Akita Inus of all varieties—red, brindle, and white—gathered in one place. Depending on the year, you might even get to meet some adorable puppies!
Additionally, at the venue—Odate-Noshiro Airport—Akita dogs welcome visitors from around 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on every day of the month containing the number 8 (the 8th, 18th, and 28th), in honor of “Hachiko, the Faithful Dog.”
