Wild Ayu

The Fragrant Bounty of the Mountains, Nurtured by Crisp, Cool Water

Surrounded by deep mountains, northern Akita is crisscrossed by rivers fed by the pure water seeping from the mountains. These clear streams nurture wild ayu.

The ayu, which grow by feeding on moss that thrives only in clean water, give off a refreshing aroma.

A distinctive feature of northern Akita’s ayu is that they grow to a surprisingly large size just before the late-autumn spawning season.

The Ani and Yoneshiro Rivers are hidden meccas for anglers, attracting ayu fishing enthusiasts from all over the country in search of these fish.

Around the time when large ayu are caught, the “O-ayu no Sato Furusato Festival” is held in Odate.

In addition to being able to enjoy salt-grilled ayu at various events and restaurants, the sweet-braised ayu is also highly recommended as a souvenir.
