Towada Winter Festival

The Lake Twowada Winter Festival treats visitors to winter wonderland of horse-drawn sleigh rides, fireworks, and igloo bars. Every evening a fireworks show illuminates the clear winter sky with dazzling color. Food stalls selling Akita and Aomori delicacies, hot wine, and more lend the event a traditional Japanese flair.

Kosaka Christmas Market

When German engineer Kurt Netto was brought from Germany to help modernize the local mine, he brought German traditions with him. In the winter of 1873 Netto held a Christmas party with the villagers which is the earliest record of Christmas being celebrated in Japan. Today, the villagers continue to celebrate this history every December with a German-style Christmas market selling baked goods, hot wine, and beer.

To celebrate Railway Day (October 14th), The Koska Rail Park holds this weekend-long event to celebrate all things locomotive. Ride on specially made railbikes, take a trip on the sightseeing train, and even have a chance to ride in the cabin of a real deisel locomotive!

Kosaka Tanabata Festival

Kosaka was once home to a productive mine which brought in workers from all around the area. The Kosaka Tanabata Festival began in the late Meiji era with workers from neighboring Aomori recreating their famous Nebuta Festival floats. Originally the floats featured characters from local folklore and religion, but now they are decorated with a wide rage of motifs including popular cartoon characters. The highlight of the festival is on the evening of the second day when all of the neighborhoods floats gather in the center of town.

Lake Towada Summer Festival

This annual event rigns in the start of the summer tourist season. There are boat races, swan boat rentals, and many other activites during the day. Approxiamtely 2,00 fireworks light up the night sky and color the lake waters below. Highlights include underwater fireworks and large star-mine mortars. A cruise boat leaves from the harbor for those looking for breathtaking views from the lake.
