When it comes to local sweets in Kitaakita, “butter mochi” is the first thing that comes to mind.

It’s made by kneading butter, sugar, eggs, and other ingredients into vertical mochi and then cutting it into pieces; there are about 13 shops certified by the Japan Butter Mochi Association.

Since the ingredients vary by maker, each shop’s butter mochi differs in taste, softness, color, and aroma, making it fun to find the one that suits your taste.

They all have a pale cream color, and their buttery flavor and unique, fluffy yet chewy texture are very popular.
