Nationally Designated Traditional Crafts
It is said that “Odate Magewappa” originated when lumberjacks began crafting bentwood containers from straight-grained cedar.
Thin slices of natural Akita cedar—known for its elasticity and beautiful grain—are soaked in boiling water to soften them, then bent into shape and secured with mountain cherry bark to complete the process.
Its bright, elegant wood texture and uniform grain, along with its gentle, simple, natural materials, have made it popular even overseas.
