Located at the foot of Mt. Kunimi in the northern part of Odate City, this wind cave—which emits cool breezes ranging from 0 to 5°C even in the height of summer—is enjoyed as a “natural air conditioner.”

Around the wind cave, at elevations ranging from 170 to 240 meters, plants typically found in subalpine zones at around 1,000 meters grow in clusters. This area has been designated as a National Natural Monument under the name “Nagashiro Wind Cave Alpine Plant Community.”

In February 2026, it marked the 100th anniversary of its designation as a National Natural Monument.

The Nagashiro Wind Cave Museum features an exhibit area with panels explaining the cave’s mechanisms and a mini-theater that explains why alpine plants grow there. Visitors can also enter Warehouse No. 1, located near the museum entrance, to experience the cave firsthand.
