Hachijo is a type of plant-dyed silk fabric that originated on Hachijō Island.

This craft spread throughout the country, and in Akita, a technique was developed to dye the fabric a distinctive “tori-iro” (magpie gray) using the roots of wild roses growing along the coast as a dye, earning it a reputation as “Akita Silk” and “Akita Yellow Hachijo.”

In Heisei 15, the only workshop in Akita City ceased operations, bringing its history to a temporary close; however, it was revived in Heisei 18 in Kitaakita City, and today, “Kotomu Kobo” in Kitaakita City is the sole producer in the prefecture.

In addition to bolts of fabric, the workshop offers a variety of products, including ties, pencil cases, and wallets.

The roads near the workshop are very narrow, making it difficult for large buses to access the site.
